Most people know Terrence Howard as a talented actor. He appeared in big movies like Iron Man and starred in the hit TV show Empire. But lately, people are talking about him for a very different reason. He shared something deeply personal. And it has left many people shocked, sad, and thinking hard about child safety.

Terrence Howard sat down for an interview on the PBD Podcast with host Patrick Bet-David. The conversation was open and honest. At one point, the host asked Howard a direct question about his first sexual experience. What Howard said next stopped many people in their tracks.

He said he was just four years old.

Howard explained that the other children involved were slightly older, around six and seven years old. He said this kind of behaviour continued regularly until he was 13 years old. He grew up in a neighbourhood where kids were left without adult supervision for long periods of time. Simple games like hide and seek slowly turned into something much more serious when no adults were watching.

For a lot of people, this is hard to read. But Howard was not trying to shock anyone. He was being honest about how these early childhood experiences affected his life in a big way.

He admitted that those years gave him a twisted view of relationships. He said he grew up thinking that everyone behaved that way. It took him a long time to understand that what happened was not normal. It was not okay. And it was not his fault.

Now that Howard is a father himself, he says he looks back at those years with a very protective heart. He wants to keep his own children safe from the kind of unsupervised environment he grew up in.

This story is painful. But it is also important. Because what happened to Terrence Howard is not as rare as many people want to believe.

In South Africa, the numbers around child sexual abuse are deeply troubling. More than 26 800 cases of child abuse and neglect were reported in the 2024 to 2025 financial year alone. Nearly 10 000 of those cases involved sexual abuse. One study connected to UNICEF found that around 58 percent of children between the ages of five and 16 in South Africa have experienced some form of sexual abuse or victimisation. That is more than half of all children.

These are not just numbers. These are real kids with real lives ahead of them.

When Howard’s interview went online, people reacted with pain and recognition. Many shared their own stories in the comments. One person wrote that this is exactly why they never let their children do sleepovers, not even with close friends or family members.

The conversation around child protection is never easy to start. But stories like Howard’s remind us that silence does not keep children safe. Awareness does. Open conversations do. Supervision does.

Every child deserves a safe childhood. No child should carry the weight of experiences that belong in adulthood. Parents, guardians, teachers and communities all have a role to play in making sure that children are protected, heard, and never left in situations where harm can find them.

Terrence Howard spoke up. And because he did, maybe more people will take child safety a little more seriously today than they did yesterday.
